平和の祭典 オリンピック

スイスでは、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）訪問、IOCバッハ会長との対談、『ローザンヌ2020ユースオリンピック』へのボランティア参加、オリンピック・ミュージアムの見学などの機会を設けていただきました。オリンピックの歴史、各大会でのテーマや取り組みを知るにつれ、「世界がスポーツの力によって一つになり、平和な世の中をつくるための祭典である」ことを学びました。バッハ会長からも、人種やあらゆる壁を超え、経済的あるいは身体的にハンデがある人でもスポーツを通して笑顔になって欲しいこと、オリンピックには世界の人々の『結束』が必要なことを教えていただきました。

赤十字というスイス理念

国際赤十字赤新月社連盟（IFRC)では、東日本大震災発生の２日後に東北へ駆けつけ、支援してくださった方とお話しました。当時の被災地の様子や支援活動の話をお聞きして、本当に多くの方の支援のお陰で自分たちは今の生活が出来ているのだと実感しました。私は、自分の被災体験を伝える活動をしてきましたが、スイスに住む方から東日本大震災のお話を聞かせていただくというとても新鮮な体験をしました。また、世界に目を向けてお仕事をなさっている方が私たちの震災経験や思いを真剣に聞いてくださる姿をみて、「私たちがこれからの復興を担っていかなければならない」と改めて強く思うきっかけとなりました。ジャガン・チャパガイン事務総長から頂いた「人の言葉をよく聞いて、そこから学んで、そして良いリーダーになる」という言葉の下、私も東日本大震災を経験した若者として復興に携わっていく決心をしました。

国連訪問

国際連合人道問題調整事務所（UNOCHA）では、たくさんの職員の方が私たちのプレゼンテーションを真剣に聞いてくださりました。東日本大震災のときに東北の救助活動をしてくださった方々に自分たちの口から現在の東北について伝えることが出来たことがとても嬉しかったです。救助活動の際に適用されていたUNOCHAの支援の仕組みを教えていただき、様々な人の努力と今までの支援の経験の積み重ねによって東北の復興はなされていることがわかりました。様々な国籍の職員の方が迎えてくださり、世界の人々が協力し合い支え合う姿を見ることができました。これこそがIOCでも学んだ「平和のための道」だと思いました。

スイスに行ったことで、世界ではどのようなことが起きているのかを知り、東北被災地の私たちのために様々な方が支援活動してくださっていることを知りました。『平和と復興』は、多くの人々の長きにわたる協力によって成し遂げられていることを知った結果、そのような『協力』、そして震災についての記憶を多くの人に『伝える』ことが大切だとわかりました。また、支援してくださった方々に、復興が進んでいる東北の現状を伝えることが、感謝の想いを伝え、支援の繋がりを途絶えさせないためにも大切だと思います。私はこの10年間、『被災者』の目線で震災を捉えるばかりで、私たちへの支援が誰によるものであったのかを考えることもなく過ごしてきました。そして、４年前に平和活動で訪問した広島で見たジュノー博士の石碑が誰の石碑なのかも知りませんでした。（※ジュノー博士：被爆者に人道的立場から尽力したスイスの医学者）

『平和と復興』は容易く実現できるものではないと実感しました。そして、支援や復興は日常では見えない部分もあるということと、それらは今でも確実に続いていることを知りました。これからは、東北の未来を担う者として、スイスで学んだ『人道の精神』を生かしながら、自分の被災体験と当時からの有難い支援について、後世に伝えていきます。また、今まで、そしてこれまでの支援へ感謝を示していけるよう、前を向いて歩んでいきます。

TOKYO五輪

TOKYO2020では、世界の人々に東北で大震災があったこと、復興が進んでいることを知っていただけるよう、聖火リレーや競技を東北で開催していただくことになりました。東北に住む私たちも『平和の祭典オリンピック』を通して、勇気や活力をもらえるきっかけにもなると思います。このきっかけから、復興に携わってくださる方が増えるだけでなく、私たちも自分たちの故郷である東北の更なる復興を目指し、東北の今を伝え続けていきます。

OLYMPICS - unite the entire world

In Switzerland, we had the opportunity to visit the International Olympic Committee (IOC) office and talk with IOC President Mr. Bach, visit Olympic Museum, volunteer at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games. As I learned about the history of the Olympic Games and the themes and initiatives of each event, I realized that the Olympics is a festival to unite the world through the power of sports and create a peaceful world. Mr. Bach also told us that he wants people to smile through sports, regardless of race or other barriers, even those with economic or physical disabilities, and that the Olympics require solidarity of people around the world.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

At the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), I talked with a staff member who rushed to Tohoku two days after the Great East Japan Earthquake to help. Hearing about the situation in the affected areas at that time and the relief activities, I realized that we are able to live our lives today thanks to the support of so many people. I had been involved in activities in relaying my experiences of the disaster to people. However, hearing stories about the Great East Japan Earthquake from people living in Switzerland was a new experience for people like us from Tohoku. In addition, when I saw the eyes of the IFRC staff members listening to our experiences and thoughts of the disaster, it made me aware once again that we must take responsibility for the future recovery. Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain told us, “Listen carefully to what people say, learn from them, and become a good leader”. And as a young person who experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake, I decided to be part of the reconstruction process.

At the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), many staff members listened intently to our presentation. We were also very happy that we were able to tell personally to people involved in the rescue operations during the disaster about the current situation in Tohoku. I learned about UNOCHA’s support system that was applied during the rescue operations, and I realized that Tohoku’s recovery is a result of the efforts of many people and the accumulation of past experiences.
At UNOCHA, we were welcomed by staff members of various nationalities, and I was able to see how people from all over the world cooperate and support each other. I believe that it was the “path to peace” that I had learned at the IOC.

By going to Switzerland, I learned about what is happening in the world and that there are many people who are supporting us in the Tohoku region. As a result of learning that peace and reconstruction is achieved through the cooperation of many people over a long period of time, I realized that it is important to share to many people about it and the memories of the earthquake and the war. Also, I think it is important to share to the people who supported us about the current situation in Tohoku, where reconstruction is in progress, in order to express our gratitude and to keep the connection of support alive.In fact, for the past 10 years, I have only seen the disaster from the perspective of a disaster victim, and I have never thought about who was responsible for the support we received. When I visited Hiroshima for peace activities four years ago, I didn’t even know at that time that the monument I saw was that of Dr. Junod. (*Dr. Marcel Junod was a Swiss medical doctor who made humanitarian efforts for the Hibakusha or those Japanese who survived the nuclear bombings.)

I realized that “peace and recovery” is not something that can be achieved easily, and that there are parts of support and recovery that are not visible in our daily lives and yet are still continuing without fail. From now on, as one of the people who will be responsible for the future of Tohoku, I will make use of the humanitarian spirits I learned in Switzerland to tell future generations about my own experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the grateful support I received from that time. I also look forward to showing my gratitude for the support I have received and continue to receive.

TOKYO Olympics

The torch relay and the games of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be held in Tohoku so that more people around the world will know that it was a region hit by the earthquake and tsunami and that recovery efforts are underway. We in Tohoku will also have the opportunity to gain courage and energy through the Olympics, which is a festival of peace. This will not only increase the number of people who will be involved in the reconstruction of the region, but we will also continue to convey the current situation of Tohoku, aiming for further reconstruction of our hometown.
