ロンドンオリンピックが開催された2012年、イギリス大使館協力のもと、イギリスホームステイプログラムを実施。出発前夜、子ども達は、近代オリンピックの始祖クーベルタンがどのような想いでオリンピックを開催したのか。オリンピックが目指す平和、共生社会などを学びイギリスに向かいました。「将来、レスリングでオリンピックに出場して、亡き父に金メダルを捧げたい。」とオリンピックを目指すメンバーは、大会観戦後、「世界最高峰の戦いは、自分がやっている競技とまるで別物のようだった。世界を目指す気持ちがより強くなった」との思いを聞かせてくれました。また、大会期間中、選手だけでなく、ロンドンの市民が一体となって大会を盛り上げている姿は、出国前に学んだクーベルタンの想いを肌で感じると共に、東北を復興させるための大切なヒントを子ども達に与えました。

In 2012, during the London Olympics, the homestay program in England was held in cooperation with the British Embassy. On the eve of their departure to England, the children learned about the peace and symbiotic society vision of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of modern Olympics.
“In the future, I want to compete in the Olympics and aim for a gold medal and dedicate it to my late father. After watching the competition, the performance of the world’s top athletes in the competition seemed to be different from what I was doing. It made my desire to aim for the world stronger.”, said one of the members who was aspiring to be a wrestler.
In addition, not only the athletes but the citizens of London as well were working together to make the event successful. It gave the children a first-hand experience of Coubertin’s vision, which they learned before leaving Japan, and they acquired important ideas for the reconstruction of Tohoku.
